What does the new NIH Public Access Policy mean for you?
A new NIH Public Access Policy is coming into effect soon. It requires Author Accepted Manuscripts accepted for publication in a journal on or after July 1, 2025, to be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication, for public availability, without embargo, upon the Official Date of Publication.
In this session, we’ll answer some basic questions about the new policy.
- What exactly is an Author Accepted Manuscript, and how is it different from a Final Published Article?
- How does the NIH Public Access Policy define the Official Date of Publication?
- I have an NIH-funded manuscript under review at a subscription journal. Will the journal allow me to comply with this policy of no-embargo public access?
- Do authors have to pay an Article Processing Charge?
- Can authors use NIH grant funds to pay an APC? What about after the period of performance?
- Will the journal handle compliance, or do authors need to do it?
- Does the award date matter?
- Can I deposit Author Accepted Manuscripts that aren’t associated with NIH funding?
- Do you have other questions? Email us and we’ll make sure to answer them.
Duration: 20 minutes of lecture/presentation; 20 minutes of Q&A
Learning outcomes: participants will be able to describe the new NIH Public Access Policy and plan how they will comply with it.
Audience: NIH-funded researchers and the staff and students who work on NIH-funded research
Note: In this session, we will focus specifically on the new policy. We won’t be using the NIH Manuscript Submission System. If you want to know more about NIHMS, we regularly offer a separate live training about grant compliance and the NIHMS, as well as video tutorials and an NIH Public Access Policy guide.
