Peeking Under the Hood: Understanding, Assessing, and Improving Your Library’s Website and LibGuides (Session 1 of 2) In-Person
In this session, the first of 2, participants will get a chance to brush up on their technical knowledge and skills, and learn to harness web analytics tools to gather key metrics about your users.
This course will be taught by Andy Hickner, the Web Services Librarian at Cushing/Whitney Medical Library. The full course is being offered as CE $265 at the Annual Meeting of the Medical Library Association in May 2018 - but YUL employees will get to take the course here at Yale for FREE!
Participants are welcome to register for either session or both; attendance at the first session is not required to attend the second session. Bring your own laptop if possible; it will come in handy during our hands-on exercises.
Session 1 overview:
- Review: HTML, CSS, separation of presentation from content
- Dynamic pages: PHP, LAMP stack; web hosting on static versus dynamic sites
- Content management systems, benefits, selection
- Theming: Responsive design, breakpoints, existing responsive frameworks
- Browser issues (e.g. IE versus modern browsers)
- Institutional considerations; getting bang for your buck
- Google Analytics
