What does the new NIH Public Access Policy mean for you? Online

new NIH Public Access Policy has come into effect. It requires Author Accepted Manuscripts accepted for publication in a journal on or after July 1, 2025, to be submitted to NIH upon acceptance for publication, for public availability in PubMed Central on the Official Date of Publication.

In this session, we’ll answer some basic questions about the new policy, such as these:

  • I have an NIH-funded manuscript under review at a subscription journal. Will the journal allow me to comply with this policy of no-embargo public access?
  • What exactly is an Author Accepted Manuscript, and how is it different from a Final Published Article?

Duration: 20 minutes of lecture/presentation; 20 minutes of Q&A

Learning outcomes: participants will be able to describe the new NIH Public Access Policy and plan how they will comply with it.

Audience: NIH-funded researchers and the staff and students who work on NIH-funded research

Note: In this session, we will focus specifically on the new policy. We won’t be using the NIH Manuscript Submission System. If you want to know more about NIHMS, we offer video tutorials and an NIH Public Access Policy guide
