Make Your Life Easier with Version Control: getting started with GitHub Desktop for projects Online

You don’t need to be working with an HPC cluster to benefit from using GitHub. From websites to open access instructional books to Zotero extensions, everything is on GitHub, and people use it for a host of reasons.

In this workshop, we will be using GitHub to make a website (and don’t worry — we have a wonderful template to share with you). At the end, we hope that you come away able to:

  • Explain the basic workings of version control, with reference to, but without knowing all of, the command line operations
  • Use GitHub Desktop to create and commit changes to a project
  • Use GitHub Pages to create a simple website from a template
  • Know where to go for more information, training, and support on working with git, GitHub, and GitHub Desktop

This is part of a two-part workshop series, paired with “Help! It’s Stuck in My Downloads Folder: Understanding Your Filesystem and Getting Started with the Command Line,” and both will be using the same project files. We hope that you join us for the full series, but it’s OK if you can only make one!
