A Crash Course in Organizing Your Research Documents

A Crash Course in Organizing Your Research Documents Online

You have downloaded articles from Yale Library's resources, installed a reference management tool, and picked your word processor of choice. But … everything's in your downloads folder still ……… isn't it?

This workshop provides guidance on how to actually organize your files to cut down on the time you spend hunting for everything on your hard drive. We will discuss how to use all of these tools together so you can spend more of your energy on what you actually want to do.

Tools under discussion: Reference management software (Zotero, EndNote); Tropy; file system organization and default search tools; backing up; file versioning; and note-taking and writing applications.

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will strategize folder and research object organization to facilitate tracking versions and improving search using their computer’s default file system browsing software.
  • Participants will use the file organization and tagging tools within their reference management software.
  • Participants will back up their reference management software and files according to a schedule.

Any student who participates in at least 3 library workshops during the semester will be eligible for a prize. Learn more about the Workshop Incentive Program.
