Navigating Open Access Publishing: A Brief Overview for Scholars Online

This class will introduce participants to the world of open access (OA) publishing, focusing on the benefits and challenges of different OA models, including Gold and Green open access. Participants will gain insights into how to select appropriate OA journals for their research, avoid predatory publishers, and understand copyright and author’s rights. The session will also cover how to take advantage of Yale’s library-supported open access partnerships, as well as tools to enhance the visibility and impact of their work.

By the end of this class, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the differences between Gold and Green open access models, including their benefits and drawbacks.
  • Identify strategies for selecting appropriate open access journals and avoiding predatory publishers.
  • Utilize Yale's library resources and partnerships to reduce article processing charges (APCs) for open access publications.
  • Navigate copyright and author rights when publishing open access, ensuring the retention of important rights.

Access tools like Journal Citation Reports and Directory of Open Access Journals to assess journal quality and impact.
