Academic Strategies: Cleaning Messy Data Using Excel and OpenRefine Online

Once you have the dataset you will be working with, you need to clean it up before running it through statistical software such as R. Excel and OpenRefine are most useful where you have data in a simple tabular format such as a spreadsheet, a comma separated values file (csv) or a tab delimited file (tsv) but with internal inconsistencies either in data formats, or where data appears, or in terminology used.

Workshop attendees will learn how to resolve inconstancies in their data, combine datasets, and sort data.

Any student who participates in at least 3 library workshops during the Fall 2023 semester will be eligible for a prize. Learn more about the Workshop Incentive Program.
