Access Public Health & Medical Information WITHOUT Library Subscriptions Online
Congratulations to the class of 2023! Are you ready to practice evidence-based public health, medicine, and nursing WITHOUT free access to subscription databases and literature through Cushing/Whitney Medical Library?
In this workshop, you'll learn about legal, free pathways to access the full text of biomedical literature. We'll demonstrate advanced search features of free bibliographic databases, like Lens and EuropePMC. We'll discuss the PubMed Free Full Text filter, and we'll try browser plugins that leverage authors' "self-archived" articles. We'll demonstrate how to save PDFs for later in your citation manager. For articles that are unavoidably paywalled, we'll talk about your options, including asking the author, finding related research products, or even paying (but paying less). And big picture, we'll ask: will you truly have no library support, or will you have some kind of library support if you fully explore your new setting?
Learning outcomes:
- Navigate around paywalls for biomedical journal articles and bibliographic databases
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the PubMed Free Full Text filter
- Distinguish between "preprint," "submitted manuscript," "accepted manuscript," and "version of record"
- Save PDFs in a citation manager for future access
- Install useful browser plugins
