Tips for designing an effective graphical abstract with Adobe Illustrator: a guide for beginners

Tips for designing an effective graphical abstract with Adobe Illustrator: a guide for beginners In-Person

Summary:

In today's academic landscape, journals are increasingly asking authors to submit a "graphical" or "visual abstract" in addition to the written abstract. The graphical abstract is a crucial element of your manuscript, as it provides an opportunity to capture the attention of potential readers.

We would like to invite you to participate in this workshop led by Caterina di Pietro, PhD, a Yale postdoctoral alumna from the Pediatrics Department that has ventured into scientific illustration. She will guide you through the process of creating a visually appealing and easy-to-understand image that summarizes your research.

During this session, you will learn concepts and principles that can be applied to any graphic design software. While Adobe Illustrator is considered the industry standard, we will explore common tools that you can use to create your graphical abstract. We will also reserve time for Q&A to address any questions or issues you may encounter while working on your abstract.

Join us for this opportunity to enhance your research communication skills and increase the visibility of your work.

You will learn about:

  • Principles of graphical design and how to apply them to scientific communication and visualization
  • Basic steps to build from scratch figures with illustrator:
    • Importance & relevance of visual communication and the opportunity it offers
    • Introduction in effective communication principles
    • Visual storytelling and visual hierarchy
    • Build color confidence
    • Typeface
