GIS Workshop: Intro to Building Geodatabases

GIS Workshop: Intro to Building Geodatabases

This is an initiative of the GIS Services at Yale University Libraries, and the IT Services at the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Would you like to learn how to create geodatabases from scratch? Interested to hear from an expert who deals with geodatabases troubleshooting on a daily basis?

Description: Geodatabases are used to organize geographic datasets such as feature classes, tables and rasters. However, the geodatabase is much more than just a container for data. It has many functionalities that can improve data integrity, model spatial relationships, and dynamic behavior for efficient GIS work.  In this workshop, we will focus on essential workflows, tools and techniques for creating a geodatabase, storing data, as well as applying some geodatabase functionalities to the data.

  • Learn several components of a geodatabase
  • Identify geodatabase functionalities
  • Create geodatabase structure
  • Learn various methods for loading data into the geodatabase
  • Create and apply spatial and attribute validation rules
  • Edit data using spatial and attribute validation rules

Instructor: Afreen Virani, Esri

Afreen Virani is a Senior Geodata Analyst at Esri, a software development company. Born and raised in Dubai, U.A.E, Afreen got her B.Sc. in Environmental Science in 2012. She graduated from Texas A&M University in 2014, with a Master’s of Science in Water Management and also obtained a certification in GIS. Her primary focus is assisting current Esri customers in identifying, understanding, and articulating solutions by means of ArcGIS knowledge including ArcGIS for Desktop, geodatabase, and related technologies. Before joining the team at Esri, Afreen worked for the Harris County Flood Control District in Houston, where she worked as a GIS Analyst to help support flood analysis using GIS. Afreen loves to travel and aims to cover the whole world someday. Apart from traveling, she is a nature lover, and in her free time, Afreen loves to go for long scenic hikes.
