Bib Your TeX: Citation Tools for LaTeX Users Online

BibTeX, like many citation tools, is a way to save time and avoid that last-minute hunt for citations that takes time away from academic research. BibTeX is designed to be used with the LaTeX typesetting system (and variants like XeTeX and LuaLaTeX). The best way to use it, though, is to bundle it into what you do upstream while locating articles and books and sifting through the information in your research area.

In this workshop, we will primarily use Overleaf, an online LaTeX writing tool similar to Google Docs, to simplify some aspects of generating documents.

Before attending: Register for an Overleaf.com account with your @yale.edu email; Optional: Bring some citations to practice importing.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • call citation packages, style files, and bib files in their LaTeX documents
  • create and edit entries in a bib file
  • find the export tools for BibTeX in major literature searching tools like Google Scholar and the Web of Science, in addition to databases hosted on library platforms
  • organize references in a tool like Mendeley, Zotero, or BibDesk

Audience: Anyone with basic knowledge of LaTeX

Registration: Required for access to the Zoom room. You will also receive a reminder email before the event.

Any student who attends at least 3 library workshops this semester will be eligible to receive a FREE Yale Library tote bag. Learn more about the Workshop Incentive Program.
